Nitro announces further plans for horse parade

NITRO, W.Va. — Nitro officials announced details about the city’s second annual horse parade, which will be held later this month.

The parade will include various horses, ponies and donkeys. Prizes will be awarded in the following categories:

— best World War I doughboy solider costume;
— best World War II soldier costume;
— best wagon decorated in any world war theme;
— best patriotically decorated horse and rider;
— best patriotically decorated group (five or more riders);
— youngest rider;
— older rider; and
— the rider who has traveled the farthest distance.

Parade organizer Susan Valleau said last year’s parade was a success.

“People talked about it for weeks afterward, and I think this year is going to be even bigger and better,” she said.

The parade begins at noon on May 12, and will be followed by a ceremony at Memorial Park to honor female veterans as well as Delmer Bird, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
