New wastewater service running in Winona

FAYETTE COUNTY, W.Va. — A public-private partnership between West Virginia American Water and New Haven Public Service District has resulted in Winona residents having public wastewater service for the first time.

According to West Virginia American Water, most residents either had to utilized failing septic systems or pipe their waste into Kenney Creek, a tributary of the New River. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has identified Kenney Creek as having the highest frequency of bacteria violations in the New River watershed.

The $5 million system provides services to 60 homes, and the remaining homes will be connected over “the next few weeks,” according to the utility.
