New date set for BridgeFest after Charleston storm

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — It’ll be later this summer before Charleston residents gather in South Hills for BridgeFest.

Originally scheduled for Tuesday evening, the FestivALL event at Bridge Road Shops was canceled as city crews concentrated on cleaning up from Monday evening’s storms which included a possible tornado in the Capital City.

“We need the workers to help set up the stage and to help close the roads and there’s just too much going on (right now),” said Emilie Couch, president of the Bridge Road Neighborhood Association.

“We don’t want to take away from the workers when they need to be other places.”

Trees were downed along with power lines throughout South Hills.

As of Tuesday morning, Bridge Road remained closed between Bridge Road Shops and the South Side Bridge.

Power outage numbers throughout Kanawha County were up above 18,000 on Tuesday morning.

“The priority is to make sure everybody’s safe, everybody has their power,” Couch said. “We are disappointed, but everybody’s safe and sound so we’ll just reschedule. It’s not a problem.”

The new date for BridgeFest, a community festival with music, dancing, food and arts and crafts, was set for Tuesday, July 23.
