Motorcyclist dies in Fayette County crash

BELVA, W.Va. — A Nicholas County man died following a motor vehicle accident in Fayette County Monday morning.

The crash happened along state Route 39 near Belva just before 9 a.m.

Fayette County Sheriff’s Deputies say a log truck overturned and rolled over onto a motorcyclist.

The victim was identified as Phillip Jenkins, 62, of Richwood. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The log truck driver was Gregory Harper, 38 of Summersville. Harper was not injured in the accident.

Investigators said the two were traveling northbound when Jenkins attempted to turn left into the parking lot of Brown’s Service Center, a local gas station. Harper allegedly swerved to the right to avoid Jenkins, lost control of the truck, and overturned.

Sheriff Steve Kessler said the cause of the accident has not yet been determined and that drugs or alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the case.

No charges have been filed at this time.

This case remains under investigation by Corporal S.R. Morris of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, Detective-Corporal J.M. Pack and Forensic Specialist Amy Farrish of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, Accident Re-constructionist Corporal C. B. Payne of the Turnpike Detachment of the West Virginia State Police and Sergeant K.E. Tawes of the Gauley Bridge Detachment of the West Virginia State Police. Officers from the West Virginia Public Service Commission also responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.
