Mobile site open for building permits in Elkview

ELKVIEW, W.Va. — Through Wednesday at least, Kanawha County residents trying to rebuild after the June flood can start the building permit process at a mobile location for the Kanawha County Planning and Development Department set up outside Elkview Middle School.

Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“You need permits for just about everything as far as outbuildings, modular homes, mobile homes, to rebuild a new stick-built home — you’ll need a permit for all of those,” said Chuck Grishaber, Kanawha County floodplain manager.

He was working at the mobile location on Monday morning.

Building permit applications were also being accepted at the Kanawha County Planning and Development office in Charleston.

For those in flood recovery, residential permit fees are being waived.

“The best advice is to try to get everything together before you come, it’ll save time and trouble,” Grishaber said.

Required documents include a tax ticket, the estimated costs of a new structure or repairs to an existing structure and, for those in a floodplain, an elevation certificate from a surveyor.

Additionally, Grishaber said a surveyor could help determine “what they can and can’t do to help save their structure or to save money or time or effort, they can give some good advice.”

Permit issuances depended on follow-up inspections from county planning officials, Grishaber said. No permits were being issued immediately.
