Meeting to be held Tuesday on future of needle use

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Members of the Charleston City Council and leaders of health care organizations will discuss the future of allowing hypodermic needles in the city at a meeting Tuesday.

The roundtable will take place at 6 p.m. at the Charleston Area Alliance.

The Charleston City Council voted at its March 19 meeting to table a measure that would have recriminalized hypodermic needles for illegal drug use. Mayor Danny Jones and law enforcement officials have pushed for the bill because of an increase of needles being left in public spaces.

Officials from the Charleston Police Department and Charleston Fire Department were invited to the meeting, but Jones said last week they will hold their own separate events at a later time.
