Mason County woman sentenced after accepting late family member’s veterans benefits

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Mason County woman will spend up to three months in prison after previously admitting to continuing to accept veterans benefits of a family member after their death.

Brandi Moore, 39, of Gallipolis Ferry, pleaded guilty in September 2018 to a felony offense of theft of government benefits. A family member of Moore died in November 2011, but Moore continued to accept benefits through April 2013 by means of the family member’s bank account.

Moore used an ATM card to make withdrawals and also admitted to forging a name on at least one check, totaling $34,393.

Moore will be responsible for paying back $34,000. She will also be subject to three years of supervised released.
