Man shot in leg in West Side shooting

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Charleston police say the victim in an overnight shooting on the city’s West Side is being “uncooperative.”

Omar Gray, 44, of Charleston, was shot in the leg at about 12:30 a.m. Friday in the 500 block of Glenwood Avenue.

“He wouldn’t tell us anything at first,” said Lt. Steve Cooper, chief of detectives with the Charleston Police Department.

Cooper was a guest on Friday’s “580 Live” with Mayor Danny Jones heard on 580-WCHS. Cooper said Gray claims he did not know the gunman.

“He just said ‘yeah, I don’t know who it was. I saw a guy. I couldn’t see his face. He shot me,'” Cooper said.

Gray was transported to the hospital. His injury is non-life threatening.

Cooper said the city typically has “very little random violence” and that most victims of violent crime have a criminal history.

Police are searching for a suspect.
