Man killed in Monday morning fire

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — One man died and three other people escaped from a burning house on Charleston’s West Side Monday morning.

“We got a call about 6:10 Monday morning on Temple Street,” said Charleston Fire Dept. Lt. Wes Smith. “The first engine arrived about 6:15 a.m. and found heavy fire in the attic of the house.”

Smith said the survivors credited the deceased victims with alerting them to the fire.

“He was on the first floor in a separate bedroom from the other subjects, they were on opposite ends of the house,” Smith explained to 580-WCHS Radio on 580 Live. “According to the other people they heard him screaming and opened up the door and actually saw him on fire as well as fire behind him.”

The fire started in the victim’s bedroom. The fire caused a lot of damage and the cause may be end up being undetermined.

The house, which is split into two apartments, was a total loss.
