Man injured after slamming his car into St. Albans police cruiser

ST. ALBANS — Kanawha County sheriff’s deputies say an 80-year-old man doesn’t remember slamming his car into the back of a St. Albans police cruiser Thursday night.

The crash happened at around 10 p.m. in the 1400 block of MacCorkle Ave.

Authorities said an officer, who was assisting a motorist because of a medical issue, parked his cruiser behind the other car. While the officer was helping the motorist, the cruiser was rear-ended by a 2002 Pontiac Bonneville driven by Donald Hoffman.

Hoffman sustained minor injuries and was transported to Thomas Memorial Hospital. Deputies said they later learned the man’s blood sugar was dangerously low.

Hoffman has no recollection of the crash or what happened an hour before the crash.

There were no other injuries involved and no other vehicles were hit in the incident.

The Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority assisted after the crash.
