Man dead after Friday night Mathews Ave. shooting

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A 20-year-old man died Saturday after he and a teenage girl were shot late Friday night on Charleston’s West Side. The third shooting death in the Capital City in the past week.

Charleston Chief of Detectives Lt. Steve Cooper released more information about the shooting when he spoke with reporters Saturday evening.

Shannon Cade, 20, and the 14-year-old girl were inside the house at 826 Mathews Ave when the hail of gunfire occurred from outside the house at about 11 p.m. Friday. Police believe 4 to 6 shots were fired, Cooper said.

Cade died at Charleston Area Medical Center Saturday evening. The girl suffered non-life threatening injuries, according to Cooper.

Police had no suspects as of Saturday evening.

The past week has been a violent one on Charleston’s West Side including two other shooting deaths. One near 7th Ave. and another on Central Ave. Police have made arrests in both of those cases.

Friday night’s shooting death was the first in the city in 2016. Charleston police investigated seven murders in 2015 and have made arrests in each case.
