Man charged with stealing car and fleeing from police

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A man accused of stealing a car, crashing it, then fleeing from police was arrested Tuesday in Charleston.

Police attempted to stop Eric Gomez, 24, who was “driving erratically” on Greenbrier Street at around 11:30 a.m., according to the police report.

Gomez refused to stop the vehicle he was operating, turned onto Washington Street East and kept driving until he drove straight through the intersection of Washington and Elizabeth Street striking a city vehicle. The city vehicle then hit another car, authorities said.

One person suffered minor injuries, but has since been treated and released from the hospital.

After the wreck, Gomez allegedly took off on foot, but was apprehended shortly afterward.

Police believe the vehicle, a Ford F-250, he was driving was stolen.

He was charged with transfer and receiving a stolen vehicle, fleeing DUI and fleeing DUI causing injury.
