Longtime federal prosecutor assumes control of office

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A longtime member of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in southern West Virginia is the new Acting U.S. Attorney following the resignation of Booth Goodwin.

Carol Casto has been an assistant U.S. Attorney since 1989 and Goodwin’s first assistant since 2010. Federal law provides for the first assistant to take over the top job when a U.S. Attorney leaves office until the President appoints a permanent replacement.

Goodwin’s last day on the job was Dec. 31. He has returned to private law practice. There is much speculation that he will run for governor this year but there has been no announcement.

It’s possible Casto will remain in the position through 2016 with President Obama in the final year of his second term.
