Laidley Field work expected to end this week

CHARLESTON, W.Va.— Damage to the University of Charleston Stadium and Laidley Field from the tornado which struck Charleston in late June should be erased by the end of the week.

“We still have a couple of items that need to be repaired, but they will be done in the next two days,” said Laidley Field General Manager Doug Carte.

The winds caused ripples in the turf on the field which was installed only a year ago.  Crews have been in Charleston in recent days smoothing those ripples and replacing any turf which was damaged.  According to Carte, very little of the turf had to be replaced, but there were a couple of pieces which had slits cut by the storm.

The bigger damage was both goal posts were bent and one of the 30-second clocks was twisted off its mount.

“It still works, but we’re going to replace it,” Carte said. “We’re going to do this right and when we’re done it will be the best facility around.

Carte said the holdup has been delivery of the two goalposts.  The clock was due to arrived Monday afternoon.   It comes on the cusp of a busy time at Laidley Field.   The stadium will host the annual MSAC Grid-o-Rama of high school football Friday and Saturday and Midget League Football starts Sunday.    The University of Charleston has already been practicing on the field this week.
