KCHA mobile unit ready by fall, treasurer says

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association provided an update Tuesday on its mobile unit, saying it should be ready “by the fall.”

The truck and trailer is the result of a $240,000 grant from the Petco Foundation. The association will use the unit for animal adoption events and emergency surgeries.

Association treasurer Jay Williams said the unit is part of the KCHA’s growing commitment to animals, which he said was changed in 2012.

“It’s been our mission to save as many animals in Kanawha County as possible,” he said. “That requires a ton of care and a ton of effort.”

Williams said the mobile unit was on the association’s “dream list,” and will allow care to be taken directly to animals in need.

“We can go out into underserved communities and offer vet services to animals that otherwise would not receive any vet care,” he said.

The mobile unit would also allow for mobile adoption events and easy animal transportation, according to Williams.

He said the KCHA has already put down 50 percent on the unit’s costs, and the trailer is being constructed by a Columbus, Ohio company.

“Our hope is (to have it ready by) Labor Day, but the end date we would most likely hope for is Thanksgiving,” he said.
