Kanawha SWA going for recycling grant from DEP

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Officials with the Kanawha County Solid Waste Authority will meet soon with the state Department of Environmental Protection about the possibility of a $500,000 grant to be used to purchase equipment for the new Slack Street recycling center.

The Solid Waste Authority met Tuesday and received an update from director James Young.

“We are just asking for the bare bones, essential components of a recycling facility. That could be a baler, a sort line, a roll-off truck. Nothing fancy. Just what we need to get up off the ground,” Young said.

Plans are to rebuild at the Slack Street site where the old recycling center was demolished earlier this year. There are some minor environmental issues with the site, Young said Tuesday.

“It’s not going to hold us back in anyway,” he predicted. “It is something we need to take care of because it means a lot for the health and safety of the employees once we get a new building constructed.”

Testing has shown vapor issues and the presence of carcinogens. The report is being reviewed, Young said.
