Kanawha, surrounding counties battle flood waters

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Flooding occurred in several areas of Kanawha and surrounding counties Tuesday morning with a few dozen roads flooded or blocked by mudslides.

Some Sissonville area residents were unable to get in or out of their homes this because of high water. Low-lying areas have flooded with the heavy rains that began overnight. There was flooding reported in Nitro, Cross Lanes, St. Albans and Tornado.

The DOH posted some road closures in the area—including parts of Smith Creek, Green Valley Drive, a section of Route 114 near Slack’s Trailer Park, one lane is closed on U.S. Route 119 at Young’s Bottom because of a mud slide.

Also sections of Cooper’s Creek, Wolfpen Road and Lotus Drive are closed because of high water.

The hillside below Yeager Airport was sliding again Tuesday morning. Of most concern was the possibility the material from the slide would cause flooding on 2-mile Creek. Yeager Airport activated its emergency operations center.

The rain was expected to taper off by Tuesday afternoon.
