Kanawha school board approves request to move power lines for portable classrooms

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Kanawha County Board of Education approved a request Tuesday that will allow portable classrooms to be safely installed at Elkview Middle School.

In a 5-0 vote, the board approved of a right-of-way request from Appalachian Power Company to relocate an electrical service line that are in the way. The company will move the lines free of charge.

The portable buildings will house students from Herbert Hoover High School. Both schools were destroyed in the June flood.

Board member Ryan White said construction has started, but installing the units will not happen until “a couple of months.”

“There was some delays due to some approval issues with the state and the federal government, so we didn’t get our initial deadline,” White said.

Kanawha County Schools Superintendent Ron Duerring previously said plans had to first be reviewed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

White said it is possible students on split schedules could remain on that schedule for the rest of the year.
