CHARLESTON, W.Va. — State school board member Jeffrey Flanagan has resigned, effective immediately.

Flanagan, of Kanawha County, had served on the board a little more than a year. He was appointed in March 2017.

Gov. Jim Justice appointed Flanagan to the board the evening before its members were to vote on a new state superintendent.

Flanagan announced his resignation to Justice in a letter.

“After many days and hours of prayer, I have decided that I am not able to truly dedicate my full attention to this position,” Flanagan wrote in the letter, which was cited in a state Department of Education announcement of his departure today.

“My job and family must be my priorities at this time. During my time on the board this past 14 months I have grown to appreciate your love for our state and the education of our children.”

Justice thanked Flanagan for his service.

“On behalf of the people of the state of West Virginia I wish to thank Jeff Flanagan for the public service he provided during his tenure as a member of the state Board of Education. I truly appreciate the time and effort he put forth to help better our education system.”

Flanagan is a salesman and musician.

No replacement for Flanagan has been selected yet, according to the release from the state Department of Education.
