Kanawha County staff recognized with top yearly honors

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Kanawha County Board of Education honored three employees last week with its awards for the top staff members of the year.

Superintendent Ron Duerring announced the recipients of the personnel of the year, teacher of the year and principal of the year honors at the board’s May 10 meeting.

The personnel of the year, Billie Sigmon, currently works as a clerk in the central office regarding elementary, middle and high schools. She said she was surprised by the honor.

“I had no idea, but I am very fortunate,” she said .”I have great administrators, great co-workers, and they’re not only my friends, but my family, too.”

Rhonda Sisson, a teacher at Finn Elementary, was named the school system’s teacher of the year.

Carver Career and Technical Center Principal Phil Calvert was named principal of the year.

“We save a lot of kids,” he said. “A lot of our students that come are maybe on the verge of dropping out. The hands-off piece attracts them there, so that’s a great feeling every day.”

This is one of the final moments of Calvert’s work in education; he is retiring at the end of this school year, ending a 33-year career. As for what he will do next, he said “fish a little bit” and visit his camp in Pocahontas County.
