Kanawha County Schools will cut more than 70 staff members

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Kanawha County Schools announced Monday it is cutting 72 positions next school year because of decreased enrollment.

The district lost 731 students between the 2015-16 academic year and the 2016-17 year. Based on the state’s school aid formula, a district’s funding is dependent on enrollment changes, meaning decreased enrollment results in decreased funding.

“Every effort will be made to reduce positions that will least affect students and programs at the affected schools,” the district said on Twitter.

The district said 47 of the positions cut will be professional positions, while 25 of the positions will be service related.
