Kanawha County deputies save 6 from car stuck in snow

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Two Kanawha County sheriff’s deputies rescued six people out of a car that became stuck in the snow this past weekend.

A man, two children and a few others were in the car when it stopped in its tracks on their drive home.

“The deputies carried the toddlers that couldn’t really walk through that depth of snow and helped them all get to their house about a half mile away,” said Sgt. Brian Humphreys with the Kanawha Sheriff’s Office.

Police had to hike about a quarter mile to get to where the vehicle was stuck. Humphreys said they had to park their cruisers on a plowed road before venturing off on foot to rescue the six people.

“The thing that makes that story stand out is, to me and to a lot of other people, I think is the fact that they don’t have to carry kids in the snow. That’s not part of the law enforcement mission, of course, it’s just doing the right thing,” he said.

Humphreys said they understand that these situations can still happen to reasonable drivers even when they try to take all the necessary precautions.

“Sometimes driving is just necessary,” he said. “You can’t just stay indefinitely at some places.”
