Kanawha County Commission signs contract for Shawnee Park pool

DUNBAR, W.Va. — Improvement work on the pool at the Shawnee Park Multi-Sports Complex will soon begin with the goal of having the pool operational by Memorial Day weekend.

The commission held a contract signing ceremony Wednesday at the park regarding repairs to the pool. The contract, worth $233,500, is with Shamblin Construction of Sissonville. The company said it will be using local workers, as are the other construction organizations associated with the project.

Kanawha County Commissioner Ben Salango said pool users have complained about the state of the pool for years, which was justified.

“It’s an old concrete pool,” he said. “They were getting their knees and their feet skinned. The filtration system wasn’t working properly, so the county commission made the commitment to fix the pool so the residents of Institute, Dunbar and really anyone in Kanawha County can use it.”

As for the $17-million multi-sports complex, Salango said work is ahead of schedule.

“We’re going to start laying the turf on May 14, and we’ll be wrapped up between July 10 and July 15 for the front part of the park,” he said.

One million square feet of artificial turf will be installed for the park’s six soccer fields and four baseball fields.
