Kanawha County Commission puts forward $23,000 for Shawnee Park pool work

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Kanawha County Commission voted last week to contribute $23,000 toward renovations of the pool at Shawnee Park, which is set to begin being developed into a multi-sports complex later this year.

The pool, which will be managed by the city of Dunbar as will the facility’s basketball court, shelter and tennis court, will undergo $100,000 worth of renovations, including upgrades to the filtering system and the pool floor.

US Methanol, who held a groundbreaking ceremony in September for its Dunbar facility, has agreed to put $77,000 toward the project as part of a building permit.

Kanawha County Commissioner Ben Salango said residents have told them the pool is in dire need of renovations.

“One of the complaints we received from the community is that the pool — not only that it was leaking — but also the surface of the pool was very rough,” he said. “Kids were getting hurt, and their feet were getting skinned.”

Salango added he expects the pool to be open starting in the beginning of next summer.

The county commission announced last week the BrickStreet Foundation had granted the Shawnee Park Foundation a $1 million grant for related work.
