Kanawha County Commission approves Shawnee field pricing for schools

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Seven Kanawha County schools will soon be able to practice soccer and lacrosse at the Shawnee Sports Complex, following a vote by the Kanawha County Commission approving a field use fee.

The commission voted Thursday to set the cost of using the field by middle and high school teams at $1,000 for middle schools and $2,000 for high schools.

According to Kanawha County Commissioner Ben Salango, registration to use space at the field opened last week.

“We want all local teams to use it, and we make it available for not only the kids in Kanawha County, but elsewhere,” he said. “They need field space. We have the space.”

The six collegiate-sized fields are open until 10 p.m.

Poca High School, which belongs to the Putnam County School system, has also expressed interest in using the facility for practices. The commission agreed Thursday to allow the school’s teams to use the facility.

“I quite frankly don’t care where the kids are from. They’re kids,” Salango said. “They are certainly welcome to participate at Shawnee, and I don’t thnk it is going to cause any field congestion at Shawnee.”

Salango said practices start as early as next week.
