Kanawha County Commission approves loan for Shawnee Park work

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Kanawha County Commission approved a $10 million bid proposal at its meeting Thursday night to pay for renovations at Shawnee Park.

The commission will take a $10 million loan from Huntington Bank, which they said offered the lowest interest rate.

Multiple public hearings have taken place since March about reconfiguring the Institute park in a multi-sports complex capable of hosting local and regional youth sports tournaments.

The $15 million project is also expected to consist of $5 million in grants.

Environmental testing is still being performed at the facility, but commissioner Ben Salango said at a July 27 meeting he expects the groundbreaking will be in November.
