Kanawha County BOE to decide on new Capital High principal

CHARLESTON, W. Va. — One of West Virginia’s largest schools could expect to hear who their new principal is, following the Kanawha County’s Board of Education meeting set for Monday night.

The board expects to vote on the new Capital High School principal in a recommendation provided by Superintendent Ron Duerring.

A public hearing is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will also include a discussion of the board’s proposed budget.

Six candidates were interviewed a few weeks ago, but no one was offered the position.

At the last board meeting, BOE President Robin Rector said they were reviewing the candidates and that a decision should be made at the next meeting set for Monday.

Duerring said they are looking for someone who can improve the academics at Capital with strong leadership skills. He also said they want a principal who’s open to community involvement within the school.

Capital High has been in search of a principal since former principal Clinton Giles resigned in February. Giles faced a misdemeanor charge for not reporting a sexual assault crime at the school in a timely manner. The charge was later dropped.
