Kanawha City DMV the 1st to offer self-serve kiosks

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The first self-serve kiosk to renew your vehicle registration went on line Friday morning at the Division of Motor Vehicles office in Kanawha County.

The stand-alone kiosks will also soon allow West Virginians to renew a drivers license at their convenience.

“We’re one of the heaviest used agencies in the state,” said Division of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Pat Reed. “I think there are a million 429 license in the state of West Virginia so a lot of people have the opportunity to renew their license and most every family owns at least two cars.”

Improved convenience is the goal of the self serve kiosks which become another way to renew with internet renewal and in person renewals at the DMV regional office still available.

The new machines however will be placed in areas where users are more likely to frequent, eliminating the trip to the DMV regional office altogether in most cases.

“The next ones to be installed will be in Kroger’s spread across the state.  Then we plan to keep adding and adding until we have them very convenient for all of our citizens,” Reed explained. “There are seven right now and we’ll keep adding.”

Currently the kiosks are at DMV offices in Kanawha City, but will soon also be available in Morgantown, Ripley, Clarksburg, Beckley, Martinsburg, and Barboursville.   Those not wishing to stand in a long line at the DMV might consider the machine as an alternative.

“Often times ares we have high populations we have wait time at our regional offices,” Reed said. “This will be an alternative to go to the self service terminal to renew their registration and soon their drivers license.”
