Kanawha building commission approves Shawnee Park bond ordinance

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Kanawha County Building Commission unanimously approved Thursday a bond ordinance allowing for the redevelopment of Shawnee Park in Dunbar.

The Kanawha County Commission is looking to reconfigure the facility into a multi-sports complex capable of hosting local and regional sports tournaments.

The building commission approved issuing lease bonds amounting up to $10 million to finance the cost of construction and renovation work.

“The Shawnee Multiple Sports Complex has tremendous community support, and the Building Commission’s actions today are another significant step towards the start of construction,” Kanawha County Commission President Kent Carper said in a press release. “This project represents a major investment in our local children and community, as well as our local and regional economy.”

The county commission previously chose Huntington Banks to serve as its local lender for the project.
