Jones says legislature should move away from Senate plan

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Mayor Danny Jones is urging state lawmakers not to increase the consumer sales tax to 7.25 percent.

The plan has passed the Senate but has so far been rejected in the House of Delegates. Charleston already has a 7 percent sales state instead of 6 percent because of Home Rule. Jones said an additional 1.25 cents on every dollar would hurt.

“That would push Charleston up to 8.25 and then we would reach a point of diminishing return,” Jones said.

Charleston collects an additional cent in sales tax to fund its pension debt and improvements to the Civic Center.
