Jackson County Schools could lose spring break because of teacher strike

RIPLEY, W.Va. — As a result of the on-going education work stoppage, Jackson County Schools Superintendent Blaine Hess will recommend to the county education board that classes be made up during the week scheduled for spring break.

The teachers’ strike will enter its fourth day Tuesday, as educators, as well as school service personnel, demand better pay and insurance benefits.

Hess said he will make the recommendation at the Jackson County Board of Education meeting Thursday.

“If that’s approved, that would put our projected closing date near June 1,” he said.

Spring break is currently scheduled for April 2 through April 6.

Hess said based on what he’s seen so far, he is not confident an end will come anytime soon.

“We’re not making the progress that needs to occur to get things back to our normal schedule,” he said.

Hess added extracurricular activities will continue as planned. He also said he’s been communicating with local teacher and service personnel leaders on the next step for the movement.

“I still think local communications important,” he said. “We’ll continue to keep those channels of communication open.”

The central office for Jackson County Schools will be open Tuesday.
