Investigation underway into Cedar Grove fires

This building on Williams Street will be demolished.

CEDAR GROVE, W.Va. — Three structures sustained major damage from separate fires in Cedar Grove Friday morning, authorities said.

The first fire started at around 6 a.m. in an empty double-wide mobile home in the 300 block of Williams Street. Those flames spread to a two-story building next door, Kanawha County Fire Coordinator C.W. Sigman said.

“We had pretty serious fire in both of them,” Sigman said.

As a firefighter was hooking into a nearby hydrant another fire was spotted at a building be used for storage in the 500 block of Alexander Street.

Sigman said the blazes appear to be connected.

“It’s definitely very suspicious. The state Fire Marshal and Cedar Grove police are working on it,” he said.

The larger building on Williams Street was already on the county’s demolition list, according to Sigman.

“So (after the fire) the mayor asked us to get a demolition contractor in there to take down what’s left of the two-story building–just because it’s going to be a hazardous now,” he said.

There were no injuries reported Friday.
