I-64 crash claims life

NITRO, W.Va. — A Virginia man was killed in a crash on Interstate 64 near the Nitro exit sometime late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning, police said.

Thomas Zaits, 38, of Bland, Va., was pronounced dead shortly after Nitro Police arrived on the scene of the crash mid-morning Wednesday. Someone spotted the wrecked jeep just off the westbound lanes.

Police aren’t sure when the crash happened. It appears the vehicle went off the interstate through the grass for several hundred feet before hitting the guardrail near the entrance ramp.

A crane had to be used to lift the vehicle back over the guardrail which slowed traffic for about 90 minutes Wednesday morning.

No word yet on what caused the crash. Nitro police are investigating.
