House Speaker Armstead urges Kanawha BOE to rebuild Clendenin Elementary within city

CLENDENIN, W.Va. — House Speaker Tim Armstead sent a letter earlier this week to the Kanawha County Board of Education urging them to rebuild Clendenin Elementary School within Clendenin city limits.

The letter, sent Wednesday to Superintendent Ron Duerring, encouraged the board not to rebuild the school in an alternative site.

“After all the citizens of this area have lost in the past few months, it would be a real blow to their morale and determination to rebuild in this area if they were to also lose their elementary school,” read part of Armstead’s letter.

Armstead said that many Clendenin residents are concerned that the school would be rebuilt elsewhere, or that classrooms would be added to an existing school rather than the construction of a new building.

The Kanawha BOE announced earlier this month that Clendenin Elementary would close down and be rebuilt after being declared almost a total loss by FEMA.
