GW’s Greene says team concept pays off

GW played tough defense in Saturday night’s win.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — George Washington High School boys basketball coach Rick Greene says it’s the team philosophy that helped GW win its third state title in school history back on Saturday night against Martinsburg 62-41.

During an appearance on MetroNews “Talkline” Monday, Greene said that philosophy is one he learned from his former coach at GW, the late Fred Aldridge.

“Really anything we do, to me, is just an extension of Coach Aldridge. He just instilled so many things in us,” Greene said.

Aldridge who coached GW to its first state title in 1971 and then became the longtime commissioner of the Mountain State Athletic Conference, died last year. Greene said like it was with Aldridge, it’s team first.

“It’s just something that honestly we don’t waver from. That’s the standard, that’s the expectation. You normally don’t last very long if you don’t have that right type of view on it,” Greene said.

Greene just completed its 25th year as GW’s head coach. He’s won more than 400 games and two state titles (2011,2018) –is he considering retirement?

“I don’t have any plans to do that now,” he said. “I’m 64 so maybe at age 70 I’ll start considering it. I don’t know. I still enjoy it and still enjoy the kids, so as long as enough kids will play I plan to keep on coaching.”
