George Washington AD says football field should be playable soon

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — George Washington High School Athletic Director Shaun Wheeler said Monday night at the school’s JV game vs. Parkersburg that the home football field should be repaired sooner than expected.

Monday night’s game was held at Laidley Field after someone drove a car over GW’s home field.

“The video’s been dropped off at the State Police so they’ll look into it further,” Wheeler said. “We did move this game down here. We’re thinking next week we’ll be able to play our JV game at home.”

The Patriots don’t have a home varsity game until week four of the 2015 season.

“It wasn’t torn up as bad as we originally thought. The sod is starting to take back,” said Wheeler. “Laidley Field’s been great letting us come down here and play the game. They’ve been really good to work with.”

Wheeler said that the sod that was torn up was put down with some over seed and the grass has gotten thicker, so no new sod would have to be put in.

Wheeler didn’t know much about who might have driven the car over the field, calling it “adolescent youth thinking it was funny.”
