Former corrections officer charged with smuggling narcotics, other drugs

WINFIELD, W.Va. – The Putnam County Sheriff’s Department arrested a former Western Regional Jail corrections officer Tuesday on charges of smuggling narcotics into the jail.

The department charged Stephen Hash of Hendersonville, Tennessee, with possession with the intent to deliver narcotics and conspiracy to deliver narcotics.

Deputies with the Special Enforcement Unit arrested Hash at the facility in Barboursville.

According to information from West Virginia State Police, Hash’s first act was committed last July when Hash allegedly smuggled a large brick containing suboxone strips, tobacco and marijuana into the jail. Hash told investigators a random woman had thrown the brick into his car as he was driving to work.

State police also said jail officers began monitoring Hash’s call, leading to further implications of transactions taking place.

Hash has been released on bond.
