Federal funding to go toward security enhancements at Yeager

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Yeager Airport will be making much-needed security upgrades to its facilities after receiving $1.4 million from the Federal Aviation Administration.

The funds, announced last week by U.S. Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., will go toward new cameras, perimeter security, fencing, access control improvements and an additional police vehicle.

“Our security system is a little older and needs improvements around here to keep up with the changing times and changing TSA regulations,” Yeager Airport Director Terry Sayre said. “These things just needed to be done.”

In regards to cameras, Sayre said the funding will be used to upgrade computer storage for on-site cameras.

“We have couple hundred cameras, I’ll just leave it at that,” he said. “We need a lot of computer storage, computer backup systems to make sure you can go back in an appropriate amount of time and review camera footage if there’s an incident.”

Gov. Jim Justice presented airport officials last week with $3 million in state funding, which could help leverage as much as $30 million in federal money.
