CANAAN VALLEY, W.Va. — Volunteers from across the state will gather at Canaan Valley Resort in Tucker County Saturday for an appreciation picnic hosted by the Adopt-A-Highway program.
Fayette County resident Laura Cevy has been volunteering for years. She helps keep Corliss Road in Fayette County clean.
“We pick up three times a year. In spring, mid-summer and the fall,” Cevy said Friday on MetroNews ‘Talkline’.
Volunteering comes natural to Cevy and her husband, she said.
“It’s something we were taught at a young age and we continue with our two daughters,” she said.
There are currently more than 40,000 Adopt-A-Highway volunteers in West Virginia that are part of more than 1,400 organizations. They help recycle about 10,000 pounds of glass, 8,000 pounds of aluminum, and 5,000 pounds of plastic each year.
Top volunteers will be honored Saturday along with the longest serving volunteers.
The state Department of Environmental Protection and Department of Transportation sponsor the Adopt-A-Highway program.
