Fayette County Sheriffs Deputies examine allegedly abused horses, find improvement

FAYETTEVILLE, W.Va. — The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office released results Friday of a follow-up investigation on horses in the Gatewood Road area that were reported as being abused and neglected in January.

A Fayette County Animal Control Officer and a deputy went to the facility Friday on an unplanned visit to check on the horses’ conditions.

Authorities say the owner cooperated fully with the inspection. The owner further reported to changing the feed provided to the horses, as well as changing the type of worm medication to them.

“There was an ample supply of grain at the facility and the owner was actually heading out to purchase additional hay when investigators arrived at this facility,” said Sheriff Steve Kessler. “The look of these horses has significantly improved over the past six weeks.”

Police also determined the horses have gained significant weight since last examining them in January.
