Father of Kareem Hunter files lawsuit against Marmet

MARMET, W.Va. — The father of a man killed in 2013 has filed a lawsuit against the city of Marmet.

Anthony Hunter, the father of Kareem Hunter, said the negligence of a Marmet police officer resulted in the death of his son.

Anthony Hunter is the administrator of his son’s estate.

Kareem Hunter was beaten to death in September 2013 in the apartment of Kelsey Legg. He was soon reported missing, and his body was found two months later in Beckley.

Legg is mentioned as a defendant in the lawsuit.

A Kanawha County jury acquitted Miguel Quinones of a murder charge in June 2016. Quinones pleaded guilty in October 2016 to a federal gun charge. Legg was sentenced to six to eight years in prison for helping conceal a dead body and being an accessory after the fact to murder.

According to the complaint, an unknown person called 911. When a Marmet officer arrived at the scene, he did not enter the apartment. The officer previously told The Charleston Gazette-Mail he did not see anything suspicious.

According to an affidavit from Kanawha County Sheriff’s deputies, a neighbor called 911 the night of Hunter’s death, and said she could hear screaming from inside Legg’s apartment building.
