Dutch Ridge area shooting leaves 1 dead, 1 injured

DUTCH RIDGE, W.Va. — A dispute between neighbors ended in a deadly shooting Wednesday afternoon, a spokesman with the Kanawha County Sheriff’s said.

Randall Douglas Woods, 62, of Clendenin, has been charged with first degree murder and malicious wounding in the death of 31-year-old David Elmore Jr., of Clendenin, and injuring of 38-year-old Cora Mae Elmore, of Clendenin.

The shooting happened the Dutch Ridge area near Pinch. The three people were in an argument in the road when a Woods pulled out a gun, Sgt. Brian Humphreys said.

“There were two people that had been shot. One man was treated by medics but they were unable to revive him. He was pronounced dead at the scene,” Humphreys said. “Another person who was shot, a female, was taken to the hospital with what’s believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.”

According to Humphreys, Woods was arguing with David Elmore Jr., Cora Mae Elmore and a third family member on Laurel Fork Road. Woods was on an ATV, and the other three were in a truck. A separate neighbor also was arguing with Woods.

David Elmore Jr. allegedly sprayed Woods with bug spray, to which Woods responded by shooting the truck, striking David Elmore Jr. and Cora Mae Elmore.

Other neighbors called 911 to report the shooting at around 1:15 p.m. and so did the Woods, Humphreys said.

“He identified himself as the shooter and told us where we could find him,” Humphreys said. “Only one person was believed to have a gun and that was the shooter but there was a dispute prior to the shooting.”

David Elmore Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene. Cora Mae Elmore was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

An investigation is underway.
