Dunbar votes to review Shawnee Park each year

DUNBAR, W.Va.– Dunbar City Council voted 6-2 to review Shawnee Park each year as part of the town’s twenty year lease with Kanawha County for the park at its meeting Monday night.

The Kanawha County Commission recently granted $60,000 to put toward the maintenance of the park. Mayor Terry Greenlee said Shawnee is a great spot for residents and it’s not that expensive.

“It gives us a place to picnic and to play golf,” he said. “It doesn’t cost us any more to run that park than it did when we were running the pool.”

He said that any money the county commission could spare for running and the maintenance of the park, while not necessary, is appreciated.

“If there’s maintenance work we’ll use it for that. If the greens or sand traps (need work), whatever we need it for it’s ours to spend as we see fit, and we’re just going to use it to help run the park this year,” Greenlee said.

Greenlee said that most of the council wants to review the park each year. As for why two council members decided to vote “no”, he said everyone isn’t for the park.

“Two members don’t like the park, but the other six do. You always have one or two people that want to be against whatever you do,” he said.

He said that the goal for the park this year is to make it more efficient, and cut aspects of it that would cost the city of Dunbar money.
