Dunbar to hold interviews for next mayor

DUNBAR, W.Va. — The Dunbar City Council will hear from the 10 candidates for mayor during interviews Tuesday evening.

The council voted during a special meeting Monday to hold the interviews. Three council members — Bill Cunningham, Rev. Gregory Hudson and Mike Scipio — have submitted applications for the position.

Interim Mayor Steve Arnott said this was done out of fairness.

“We agreed to have all 10 come (and) make their case for why they would like to be mayor,” he said.

Council will then vote on who they would like to serve as mayor at its Aug. 21 council meeting.

The other candidates are:

— Lanny Coberly, a pastor of a Dunbar church;
— Mark Halburn, who operates a Putnam County news website;
— Dana Hayes, a former councilman;
— Virginia Nesselrotte, a retired Verizon employee, private art teacher and former candidate for city council;
— Sierra Sovine, a former city council candidate;
—Lisa Wilkinson; and
— former Dunbar Mayor Jack Yeager.

The person will replace Terry Greenlee, who resigned last month to become deputy commissioner of the West Virginia Alcohol Beverage Control Administration.

The commission also voted Monday to manage the pool, basketball court, shelter and tennis court at Shawnee Park. The Kanawha County Commission will maintain the rest of the park, which it is trying to transform into a multi-sports complex.
