SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state Division of Highways says a three-month project will impact interstate traffic on Interstate 64 in Kanawha County.
The agency has hired a contractor to repair the bridge deck and replace the expansion joints on a six-lane bridge in South Charleston between the Kanawha Turnpike and MacCorkle Ave. exits.
“For anyone who travels that area it’s evident this bridge is in need of repairs,” DOH Communications Specialist Carrie Bly said. “This is the one that actually during last Spring and into the Fall and Winter we had to do a couple of emergency closures there (because of expansion joint problems.)”
Kokosing Construction Company, Inc., plans to do most of the work, which will include deck repairs by applying a Latex Modified Concrete overlay, overnights and during the weekends, Bly said.
“Your commute is going to be fine but we are going to have those (lane) closures in the evening time during the weekdays and on the weekend that’s going to be continuous work,” according to Bly.
The bridge, officially named the U.S. Army CPL Kenneth R. Hess Bridge, takes three lanes each eastbound and westbound on I-64, which is the busiest stretch of interstate in the state.
The project begins this Friday, April 1, and is scheduled to be completed by June 30. Motorists are asked to stay alert at all times, Bly said.
“When you see the orange signs please obey the speed limit and avoid distractions,” she said.
The DOH released the following construction schedule Tuesday:
Monday – Wednesday 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM (This week only)
· Shoulder closures on I-64 EB between MacCorkle Ave and Kanawha Turnpike off ramps.
Friday / Saturday 7:00 PM to 10:00 AM
· Double left hand lane closure on I-64 EB starting after Exit 54 off ramp and ending before Kanawha Turnpike on ramp.
· Double left hand lane closure on I-64 WB starting before Exit 55 off ramp and ending before MacCorkle Ave on ramp.
Saturday 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM
· Single left hand lane closure on I-64 EB starting after MacCorkle on ramp and ending before Kanawha Turnpike on ramp.
· Single left hand lane closure on I-64 WB starting before Exit 55 off ramp and ending before Exit 54 off ramp.
Saturday/Sunday 7:00 PM to 10:00 AM
· Double left hand lane closure on I-64 EB starting after Exit 54 off ramp and ending before Kanawha Turnpike on ramp.
· Double left hand lane closure on I-64 WB starting before Exit 55 off ramp and ending before MacCorkle Ave on ramp.
