CPD to hold fundraiser for officer battling cancer

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Charleston Police Department is holding a fundraiser for one their own this weekend.

The fundraiser is for Patrolman Larry Holstein.

“He’s battling cancer,” said Police Chief Steve Cooper.

Holstein, 28, was diagnosed in 2017 with medullary thyroid carcinoma, a rare form of cancer in the throat.

The department will host a double elimination basketball tournament fundraiser at Capital High School Saturday at 9 a.m. in his honor.

“They’ll be playing all day. They’re also having yard sales and inflatables up there for kids, full concessions and a raffle table,” Cooper said.

The entry fee for the tournament is $20. Yard sale spots are available for $25 and inflatables for kids are $2.

“All the money is going to go to assist Officer Holstein and his wife as you can imagine medical bills and other expenses, being off work and being 28 years old facing such a serious health threat,” Cooper said.

Cooper said Holstein is in good spirits.

Donations will be accepted at the event.
