CPD continues murder probe

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Detectives still aren’t sure if they will charge a man who was injured in a deadly shooting Monday night in Little Page Terrace.

Danny Fortune remains hospitalized after being shot in the chest. Police allege Clarence Murray, of Charleston, shot Fortune and Sheena Graves, 19, of South Charleston. Graves was killed.

Charleston Police Chief of Detectives Lt. Steve Cooper said police have a good case against Murray.

“We found several witnesses that laid out exactly what happened and their stories matched and they matched the crime scene,” Cooper said. “We’re still investigating (Fortune) to see what, if any, charges will be filed against him.”

According to the criminal complaint, Murray was showing off a gun and making statements that he wanted to use it when Fortune came walking by. The two exchanged words and then Murray started firing shots. Both Fortune and Graves were hit.

Cooper said it doesn’t appear Graves was committing any crimes.

“(Murray) was an acquaintance of her’s, but we’re not sure exactly of the whole relationship but she doesn’t appear to have been involved of any type of illegal activity or anything like that,” Cooper said.

Murray, who is a convicted felon, remains in the South Central Regional Jail without bail.

Cooper made his comments Wednesday on 580-Live with Charleston Mayor Danny Jones.
