Covenant House shows off new full-service health clinic

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — An expansion of healthcare services to Covenant House in Charleston is here.

An open house took place Friday afternoon at the Shrewsbury Street location to show off a new full-service health clinic at the facility that is put together by West Virginia Health Right.

Dr. Angie Settle, CEO West Virginia Health Right said the clinic is open two half days a week, on Tuesday and Friday from 8 a.m. to noon but would like to see it expand with extra funding.

Covenant House and West Virginia Health Right have been serving the less fortunate for decades with testing services for HIV and Hep C along with treatments for substance use disorder.

The clinic allows for a complete healthcare checkup including blood pressure, high cholesterol and birth control.

“We are bringing medical care to high risk, very vulnerable populations. Through almost four decades of having our service center open, people feel like this is a place of social trust and it makes a big difference,” Ellen Allen, the Executive Director of Covenant House said.

Allen expects the clinic to get busier as the word gets out about its opening.

“We have sometimes as many as 200 people a day here,” Allen said of the entire facility. “We average close to 160 a day. We are certain we are in the right place, doing the right things. We are committed to this effort for a very long time.”
