Court hearing set for Crossings Mall bankruptcy

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — An in-person hearing regarding the Crossings Mall bankruptcy case will be held April 6.

The U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of West Virginia held a telephone hearing Wednesday regarding the case.

The hearing was requested by the Kanawha County Commission.

“Time is of the essence, and the county’s goal remains to have the bridge built and to move forward,” commission president Kent Carper said in a press release.

The purpose of the April 6 hearing will be regarding financing plans to build a new bridge to the property. The previous structure was destroyed in the June 2016 flood.

Carper said on Thursday’s “580 Live” said the mall’s owners, Tara Retail Group, could regain the property and build a new bridge, or U.S. Bank Association could take control of the property and be responsible for making sure a bridge is built.

He said he has heard people complain about the county commission not getting more involved and asking the West Virginia National Guard to install a bridge.

“You don’t think I didn’t think of that three days after [the flood] happened?” Carper told progran host Charleston Mayor Danny Jones.

Carper said Tara Retail Group’s owners must be held responsible, adding the owner had plans from the beginning about replacing the bridge.
