Coonskin Park to have new soccer field finished by next month

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — “The best soccer field in the state of West Virginia” will be complete at Kanawha County’ Coonskin Park by mid-August, according to parks and recreation director Jeff Hutchinson.

“They’ll start turfing the field in about two weeks,” Hutchinson said.

Crews, so far, have uncovered collector pipes that run down the side of the surface to get the water from the June 23 flood off the current grounds of the field.

“As we go along we’re going to put two player’s shelters, kind of like dugouts, here on this end,” Hutchinson pointed out to reporters. “The future plans are to put a press box right up on top of the bleachers.”

New turf would have costed Parks and Rec $750,000, but Hutchinson said they entered into an agreement for a cheaper price.

“They would do it for less than half, so for $300,000 they’re going to put the turf back in,” he said of the contractor.

Hutchinson said the new field will attract soccer and lacrosse events with easy access to the park from Interstate 79.
